Know The Basics: Basic Skin Care - Head To Toe

This is a series I'm trying to pull in on Pretty Polka to help my readers know some basics not about anyone or anything but you!
So today's post is going to be about the dermis, epidermis, subcutis - oh wait yup its about the layer that protects your vital organs. Ok chill! its your skin and we are gonna see some basic skincare tips today to keep it glowing :))

Scalp Skincare

Scalp is just an extension of facial skin and when you do so much to keep your face look healthy, glowing, young and flawless why not spend some quality time to keep its extension the same way?
Keeping your scalp clean and fresh is very important as it is the part which is more prone to the harsh sun rays and pollution.

  • Wash your hair regularly.
    • If you have oily hair\scalp, try washing everyday ot atleast alternate days and hot oil massage once a week atleast to keep your scalp healthy.
    • If you have normal hair\scalp wash your hair twice a week and hot oil massage once a week.
    •  If you have dry hair wash your hair twice a week after a good oil massage as it would help combat the dryness.
    • If you have any problems like dandruff, hairfall etc then use the anti-dandruff\anti-hairfall solutions religiously as dandruff is just excess dead skin cells that accumulate on your scalp making it look unhealthy. It is good to shampoo your hair everyday if your scalp is dandruff-prone.

  •  Use slightly warm water to wash your hair and rinse with cold water in the end as it helps open the pores on your scalp and clean them up while shampooing. You can also use a wide-tooth comb or a shampoo comb to clean your scalp.
  • It is always said that you mustn't apply your conditioner on your scalp as it clogs the pores and it is true as well. But the truth is your scalp also needs hydration and can use some moisture :) Just make sure to pick up a non-comedogenic conditioner or you can try this one which can be applied on scalp ;)
  •  If you are living in a place with salt\desalinated water then this would help you get your hair cleansed the best way. It also helps in reducing hairfall and maintaining your hair healthy. The secret is to use mineral\drinking water for your last rinse. Over a period of time this really helps to keep your hair healthy.

Facial Skincare

You all would know the best ways to keep your facial skin at their best form but still we come here reminding them for you!

  • Find your skin type first as this helps you figure out how exactly you must take care of your skin.
  • Wash your face atleast twice a day to get rid of that dirt, grease and grime. Never wash them more than 3 times how much ever oily your skin feels as excess washing strips all the natural moisture from your facial skin leading to flaky dry skin. To minimize it you can use oil control film.
  • If you have oily skin, scrub your face everyday with a mild scrub or scrub twice a week with an effective scrub to get rid of the sebum. Also a good clay\mud based face pack like Everyuth cucumber face pack once in a week would help getting that healthy glowing skin.
  • Normal\combination skin beauties can scrub their face twice a week to get rid of the sebum as well as to prevent the annoying blackheads. A refreshing face pack like the Aromamagic Charcoal face pack can work wonders for any type of skin.
  •  Dry skin beauties don't wash your face more than twice a day and use a good moisturizer after every wash. You can use a mild scrub once a week to keep those black & white heads away although you wouldn't generally be much prone to them. Its always good to have a clean & neat skin right? ;)
  • Never skip your CTM\CSTM routine whatever your skin type is.

  • Never skip your sunscreen and always carry an umbrella with you if you happen to go out in the sun everyday. Cause even if its for a short while your sunscreen isn't going to give you much protection during regular exposure to the sun!
  • Don't touch your skin at all as it spreads all the bacteria you have in your fingers onto your face!
  • Always remove your makeup before hitting the bed as this is the time your skin regenerates and makeup on your skin would block your pores making your skin unable to breathe and ruin it.
  • Don't skip your night time skincare routine. Remove makeup and cleanse your skin thoroughly. You can also use a good face pack once a week to get great skin.
  • Clean your makeup brushes well after every use possible or atleast sanitize them after every use to avoid spreading bacteria. This will also help your skin from breaking out due to unclean brushes.
  • Don't use too much face makeup on an everyday basis as this keeps clogging your pores making it uncomfortable for your skin.
  • Try choosing Non-comedogenic makeup and skincare products as they don't clog your pores and help prevent blackheads.
  • Do not pop your pimples - they spread or leave marks. Use toothpaste (if it works for you) or a Benzoyl Peroxide cream to dry them out and treat them the right way!
Note: I don't take my own advice on this one. I never used to have pimples during my teens but I keep getting them at this age!! I ALWAYS POP MY PIMPLES! But I do it very carefully using a tiny cotton pad and take out the pus & the root from it. Alternatively if it is a huge one I grate a little carrot, take its juice in the cotton pad and keep applying it on the pimple for around 15 minutes. After this interval the pus will be on top and I just pop it up!

Body Skincare

Your Body Is Your Temple
Keep It Pure & Clean
For The Soul To Reside In!

Yes your body is something you really need to take care of to keep your soul happy and peaceful :)
So here are some good tips to keep it at the pink of health and gorgeousness ;)

First things first - you are a soap user or a shower gel user, always choose a good product that has PH levels more than 7.5 (out of 10) as these PH levels normalize your skin's PH level keeping it "chemically" safe :)

Use lukewarm water for your shower as it helps protect the natural hydration your skin has. Also don't rub your skin off with towel for drying as it rips all the goodness from your skin. Instead just gently pat dry your skin using a soft towel.

Use a good body scrub to scrub your body atleast once a week to get rid of the dead skin cells.

Always moisturize your body right after your shower to seal the moisture onto your skin because this is the best time your skin has it natural moisture in it too.

Never skip applying sunscreen to your sun-exposed body parts. I usually tend to make a concoction of my body lotion\cream, sunscreen and favourite body oils (I prefer olive oil & Vitamin-E oil) and apply it all over my body. I don't know if its the right thing to do - but this is what I follow and it has helped me :)

Drink atleast 2 to 3 litres of water a day as it hydrates your skin and keeps it healthy. It also helps flush the toxins away from your body.

If you can, drink a glass of green tea as it is rich in anti-oxidants and it helps you to get clear skin.

Don't smoke or drink alcohol as it ruins your skin the most.

Eat a well balanced diet to make sure you get all needed vitamins and minerals for your skin. Also make sure you include more natural foods to your diet than processed food.

Never skip fats thinking they add your pounds - healthy fats are always good so include a good amount of saturated fats to your diet to get a good body.

Whether you are lean or fat exercising always helps keep your body toned and making your skin sweat helps flush all the toxins from your body.

Sleep! Get a good night sleep of atleast 8 hours as this is the time your skin regenerates and it helps improving your skin. Oh yeah beauty sleep gets rid of those horrid dark eye circles and under eye bags!

Feet Skincare

Grandma and our moms are always right!

I say this because washing your hands and feet immediately after getting home from a tiresome day really helps keeping them clean and if you include a good wash it can help flushing away the bacteria too!

Never miss applying the sunscreen & moisturizer on your feet as they are exposed to sun too.

Do some simple foot exercises to keep them strong and healthy.

If you can, use a good electrical massager to massage your feet every night to get rid of the soreness.

Use a good foot soak once a week followed by a pedicure to give your feet all it wants!

Choose shoes that make you stand and walk comfortable in them and don't go for tight ones as they tend to block the blood flow.

Invest in a good foot cream if you have cracked feet or other foot issues.

Use clean tools while cleaning your feet and for your at home foot spas and pedicures.

Follow same steps as you do for your face - cleanse, scrub, moisturize, sunscreen and good to go.
Voila you get a happy feet :))
