Mangalyam Thanthunanena - My Journey As A Bride: Nalangu Function

Hello lovely readers :)
Sorry for being MIA for long - honestly haven't got much time to sit and pen down a post at one go :( *sigh* But I'm pretty active on Insta and update almost every day! Are you following me there? If not you are missing something interesting, so do follow me right now here :)!!

So coming back to today's post I'm a TamBrahm (Tamil Brahmin) girl and I'm super crazy about a TamBrahm wedding! TamBrahm weddings are elaborate, crowded, grand and super fun - oh someone please hand me a hankie because I didn't get a chance to have such a wedding :'( (because I married someone who is not a TamBrahm - no regrets about my choice of spouse though :D).

Well although I didn't get a chance to have a lavish wedding, we weren't ready to miss the fun part. So we did have our smaller functions that would spruce up some fun ;) The first one was Nalangu/Nalungu which is a cleansing ritual for the body and the soul.

It's a family level celebration where the bride-to-be and groom-to-be are made to sit and all elder women in both families apply a paste of kumkum & turmeric on their cheeks, hands and feet. Some use sandalwood powder instead as well. This is a women-centric celebration majorly but brings in loads of fun and relaxation. This is mostly held the day before wedding in the mandap together for both the bride and groom while some prefer doing it separately for the bride & groom.

As me and Mr. Husband (our families to be exact) belong to different cities and as ours was a temple wedding, we had our Nalangu celebrations separately in our own houses - nevertheless we had so much fun! :D :D

Outfit wise I chose a simple silk cotton saree in coral with water drop jari work all over the saree as I love silk cotton very much especially for it lightness and comfort! As it was a total last minute plan to have the Nalangu early (since days nearby our wedding weren't auspicious enough) I didn't even have time to get the blouse stitched - so paired it with a readymade cotton blouse! I didn't bother much though because I was leaning more towards comfort than festive (summer you see :P)

Both Saree & Blouse from The Chennai Silks, Velachery
Accessories wise mom was very strict and wanted me to wear all gold but I'm never fond of decking up in gold!😝 So I kept it simple - wore my gold jhumkas, gold chain, my favourite Kemp neckpiece, pearl studded chutti, bronze gold bangle set in one arm and a dull gold pleated bracelet with a jhumka charm! :)
